Millicent A. Comrie, OD, O.D., MD, MPH, FACOG, Director and Founder of the Center for Women’s
Health at Maimonides Medical Center, in Brooklyn.
Dr. Comrie was also Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the State University of New York (SUNY) - Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Dr. Comrie did her residency at LICH in obstetrics and gynecology, and was the hospital’s Chief of Adolescent Gynecology from 1983 to 1989. She is particularly interested in the management of fibroids and menopause and has established the Fibroid Center, the only facility in Brooklyn offering an integrated gynecological, surgical and/or radiological approach to treatment. Over the past several years, she has increased community outreach and forged alliances with community organizations to improve women’s health. Due to her extensive work on fibroids, Dr. Comrie is responsible for saving the uterus of many women who would have not had this opportunity. After surgery, many of these women have had one or more babies.
Dr. Comrie holds an MD from SUNY – Downstate and an MPH in maternal and child health population and family planning from Columbia University School of Public Health.
She is a fellow of both the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Brooklyn Gynecological Society, and a member of the Organization for International Development and the Caribbean-American Outreach Association. She also served as Director of the Myrtle Ferguson Girls Rescue Center in Kingston, Jamaica. She has done medical missions in Jamaica, West Indies.
Dr. Comrie has been the recipient of numerous awards; to name a few: the Physician Recognition Award from Long Island College Hospital in 1996, and the Masters teacher Award in Obstetrics and Gynecology from SUNY Alumni Association in 2001. Additionally, she was honored by The Victims of Violence, Rape Crisis Intervention program, for her dedicated and compassionate care of survivors in crisis. In 2016, Dr. Comrie was awarded the Order of Distinction by the government and people of Jamaica for her work in medicine and family life. Also in 2016, she received the Leader in Medicine award from the Society of Foreign Consuls.
Dr. Comrie has been selected as one of the top black doctors in New York and New Jersey. She was selected as one of the top 100 doctors by New York Magazine for three years in a row. Dr. Comrie is loved and appreciated by her patients because of the unique care she gives to them. She has been invited on numerous occasions to speak on various health issues mainly those affecting women. Dr Comrie does a weekly community voluntary radio program on 93.5 FM to educate the listeners on health matters.
Dr. Comrie is a devoted wife and mother. She’s dedicated to her family, work family, friends and associates. She has maintained long lasting relationships with patients from all over the world. Patients come from the Caribbean, Africa, Germany, and Japan and all over Europe. She is a household name in the tri-state area.
Dr. Comrie is also a founding board member of the Red Hook Initiative, nonprofit “creating change from with” for over 6,500 residents of Brooklyn’s historically under resourced Red Hook public housing community. She has received widespread recognition for her work and service, including the Marcus Garvey award for community service, the Leader in Medicine Award from the Society of Foreign Consuls, and the Order of Distinction from the government of Jamaica in 2016. She also received the Great Immigrant and Great American Award from Carnegie Foundation of New York July 2021.
