The Hon. Genine D. Edwards was appointed as the Administrative Judge for
Supreme Court, Kings County, Civil Term, in January 2025. She was elected to the
Civil Court of the City of New York in November 2005. In 2011, she was elevated
to Acting Justice of the Supreme Court, and in November 2015, she was elected as
a Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. Justice Edwards formerly
presided over a Medical Malpractice Part and was the Presiding Justice of the
Medical Malpractice Alternative Dispute Resolution Part in Kings County.
Justice Edwards earned her Juris Doctorate from St. John’s University School of
Law. Before obtaining a law degree, she was an International Stock representative
for Shearson Lehman. Justice Edwards earned her Bachelor of Arts in
International Studies from Long Island University, the C.W. Post Campus. She was
born and raised in the beautiful borough of Brooklyn and is the proud product of
the public school system.
Justice Edwards began her career as an Assistant Corporation Counsel with the
New York City Law Department, where she honed her skills as a trial attorney.
Thereafter, she continued working in public service as staff counsel at the New
York Power Authority, litigating employment discrimination actions. For almost a
decade, Justice Edwards was a senior staff attorney at Cohen, Kuhn and
Associates, protecting the rights of Hartford Insurance Company’s insureds. She
also served as a volunteer arbitrator in the Small Claims Part of the Civil Court in
Kings County.
Justice Edwards has been a Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association board member for
over a decade. She is currently a Vice President and chairs various committees,
including Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Holiday Party, and Young
Lawyers. She moderates Lunch with a Judge monthly, annually participates in
Read Across America, and is an integral participant in the nominations,
mentorship, and Gala committees.
Justice Edwards is a Board Member of the Association of Justices of the Supreme
Court of the City of New York, St. John’s University School of Law’s Alumni
Association and Alumni of Color Association. She is the immediate past Chair of
the Board of Justices of the Supreme Court, Kings County. Justice Edwards is a
member of several organizations, including the Judicial Friends Association, where
she serves on the internship committee, the Bench Book Committee of the
Association of Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, the
Columbian Lawyers of Brooklyn, the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers,
the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the Tribune Society, and is a former
President of the Board of Judges of the New York City Civil Court. In addition, she
serves on the CPLR Advisory Committee for the Office of Court Administration and
the Medical Malpractice Committee for the New York City Bar Association.
Justice Edwards is a staunch advocate for student interns and regularly hosts
interns from high school to law school. She is a frequent career day panelist and
mock trial judge for St. John’s University School of Law. She is a mentor for St.
John’s University School of Law’s Alumnae Leadership Council and the Puerto
Rican Bar Association. Since the height of the pandemic, she hosted the virtual
Summer Speaker Series for the Kings County Supreme Court interns. In addition,
Justice Edwards formerly served as the Judicial Liaison for the Ronald H. Brown
Law School Prep Program at St. John’s University School of Law and the Chair of
the Gender Fairness Committee in Civil Court, Kings County. She currently co-
chairs the Kings County Hon. Betty Weinberg-Ellerin Women in the Courts
Committee.
Justice Edwards created and continues to moderate “Meet Your Judges,” a forum
for the Brooklyn community to meet and interact with judges from various courts.
She has also served as a panelist discussing medical malpractice and alternative
dispute resolution matters. She recently discussed “Juggling Life with the
Practice of Law” for the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers’ Continuing
Legal Education series and “From the Bench” for the American Board of Trial
Advocates.
Finally, Justice Edwards has been awarded the Trailblazer Award from the
Women’s Law Society at St. John’s University School of Law, the Sybil Hart Kooper
Award from the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, the Outstanding Service
Award from the Kingsboro Temple Seventh Day Adventist Church and the
Humanity and Wisdom Award from the Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church.
